Research InterestsMy research interests are in the area of human-computer interaction (HCI) using audio, video and other modalities. I believe that using multimodal input is a key to achieving robust performance in HCI systems in a large variety of environments. Current systems, for example automatic speech recognition systems, often work well in lab environments but still struggle when applied in real-world applications. We need to overcome these problems, so that HCI systems of the future adapt to the human user, rather than the human user adapting to the computer system. In this area, I am also interested in affective computing systems that sense the affective state of a person. Other research interests include computer vision and image processing. For example, I am interested in improving active appearance models for facial feature tracking which then can be applied to applications such as accurate face tracking, audio-video automatic speech recognition, facial gesture analysis and affective computing. A recent research interest has been in the use of far infrared (thermal) video cameras for affective computing as well as health care applications. This technology gives a temperature reading for pixel in the video frame and thus allows to measure accurately the surface temperature of an object such as a face. Finally, I have an interest in networking technology for sharing data corpora.
