Research Interests

My main research interests are centred around natural (and formal) language processing; particularly I have a long standing interest in controlled natural language design and processing. Controlled natural languages are well-defined subsets of natural languages that have been restricted to its grammar and its lexicon. Grammatical restrictions result in less complex and less ambiguous sentences, while lexical restrictions reduce the size of the lexicon and the meaning of words for a particular application domain. Using a machine-oriented controlled natural language, texts become easier to read and understand for humans, an are easier to process for machines. To learn more about controlled natural languages, please visit the Controlled Natural Languages homepage (http://www.ics.mq.edu.au/~rolfs/controlled-natural-languages). Other research interests are: question-answering, spoken language dialog systems, knowledge representation and automated reasoning.
