Research InterestsMy research involves investigation of perception and cognition of auditory and temporal phenomena including music, dance, and environmental sounds. Examples of research questions being investigated collaboratively with colleagues and research students include: How are complex non-verbal, temporal events such as music and contemporary dance learned, recalled, and recognized? What role do intensity dynamics and change play in perceptual and emotional responses to music? How might everyday sounds be used in the design of auditory warnings so as to reduce operator response time and error? Can expectations of complex metres and temporal relations in music be acquired implicitly? I conduct basic research using methods from experimental psychology and cognitive science with application to the performing arts, human factors, and human-computer interaction. In 1996 I established the Australia Music and Psychology Society (AMPS-http://www.ampsociety.org.au/) and have coordinated two cross-institution ARC Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities grants from MARCS Auditory Laboratories for motion capture facilities, customized audience response technology, and sound file analysis tools (http://psysound.wikidot.com/). I’m an Associate Professor in Psychology at the University of Western Sydney (UWS) and convene the MUSIC, SOUND, & ACTION group in MARCS Auditory Laboratories (http://marcs.uws.edu.au) at UWS. Since 2004, I’ve enjoyed co-convening HCSNet with Robert Dale and Denis Burnham!
