Research InterestsMy research involves investigation of perception and cognition of auditory and temporal phenomena such as music, speech and environmental sounds. Examples of research questions include: are there commonalities in the extraction of pitch contour in short musical and spoken items? How do different types of auditory icons affect learning and recognition by children and adults? How are non-verbal temporal events such as music, environmental sounds, and dance represented in human memory? I conduct basic research using methods from experimental psychology and cognitive science. These methods are also used in more applied contexts such as: 1) Investigating the effect of tinnitus on cognition; 2) Evaluating intelligibility and naturalness of text-to-speech synthesis systems; 3) Developing a theoretical framework and taxonomy of auditory warnings; 4) Devising and evaluating auditory icons and warning signals; 5) Investigating psychological responses of audiences to contemporary dance.
