Research InterestsI am interested in the application of unsupervised learning techniques to all aspects of linguistic/ontological/cognitive analysis. My earlier work concentrated on unsupervised discovery of phonological, morphological and grammatical structure, both in text and speech. More recent work has concentrated on the extension of this unsupervised language learning research to uncovering semantic/ontological information in the context of the robot baby and intelligent room projects. This involves working with speech and video, including noise cancellation, blind and semi-blind signal separation, and the use of lip-reading to improve speech recognition. Evaluation of unsupervised learning by its nature requires the development of objective measures and cannot depend on subjective treebanks reflecting a particular linguistic model, since the object is to discover a linguistic model rather than to train to a linguistic model. For this reason evaluation has become a major theme, and application-oriented evaluation has become a major focus, with applications such as websearch and information retrieval, speech recognition, spelling correction, and transliteration of Asian languages. An additional extension of this focus is to research and contracts relating to brain computer interfaces and neurolinguistic research. Three startup companies, I2Net.com.au (speech control of devices), YourAmigo.com (advanced search engine) and BioX.com.au (ambulatory biometrics) are commercializing our research, reflecting offshoots of this unsupervised learning approach in specific application areas.
