Research Interests

My main research interests lie in the areas of Language Technology (or Natural Language Processing), User Modeling and Human-Computer Interaction. I am particularly interested in flexible and tailored information delivery: providing people with the right information, at the right time and in the appropriate manner. This involves developing theories and techniques to understand the underlying data, which is often in a textual format, to select the appropriate subset and reason about how to present it to the user, in such a way as to make the information easy to understand and use. To do so, there may be a need to find appropriate content, potentially from a number of knowledge sources, summarise it and aggregate it, ensuring that the result is appropriate, useful and coherent to the user, and decide on the modalities in which to present it. More generally, I am interested both in understanding language, in facilitating human communication with and through computers and in understanding how people communicate. An important aspect of my work has been its multidisciplinary approach, working with experts in knowledge-based systems, knowledge acquisition, translation studies, human-computer-interaction and multi-agent architectures. At CSIRO, I have worked collaboratively with scientists in information retrieval, electronic documents and human computer interaction.
