Research Interests

Our research focus is on automatic translation of a deaf sign language, specifically the Australian sign language called Auslan. In order to achieve automatic two way communication between spoken and signed languages, various areas of research are required in computer vision and graphics. To translate English into Auslan, robust speech recognition and facial expression recognition systems as well as a sign display system using computer graphics are required. To translate Auslan into English, it is important to recognise signing gestures as well as facial expressions and lip movement.
