Research InterestsPrincipal area of research is development of methods for application in all areas of hearing disability. Related to this is development of experimental techniques to investigate all domains of hearing. This work services rehabilitation strategies, including efforts to find appropriate technology and interventions to allow better adaptation of listeners, particularly those with impaired hearing and/or tinnitus, to the range of environments they must contend with.
Hearing loss and its accompanying distortions can be understood as a non-desired form of variation in input, and several behavioural manoeuvres are used by people with hearing impairment to try to adapt to this. Self-imposed isolation becomes a coping mechanism, hence loss or reduction of opportunity. Improving understanding of the range of problems confronted and why these are problems, relies on various forms of self-report/rating. Not least of the problems for those with hearing loss, and sometime for the normal case, is variability of signal and listening conditions, and the sometimes impossible demands put on the system. Technological solutions may become available down the line to assist in enabling improved connection with social and physical environments for all people. Solutions that rely on alternative modes of signal delivery are worth researching; this research direction can extend to people with visual impairments.
