Research Interests

Efficient implementation of text compression and information retrieval systems, exploring the balance between effectiveness (degree of compression, and quiality of answers respectively) and efficiency (the amount of computational resource required). The idea is to determine where the points of diminishing marginal returns are, so that practical systems can be constructed that represent appropriate engineering compromises. For example, past achievements have included work on novel index representations that accelerate query processing, and new techniques for approximate source coding. Fundamental to almost all of my work is experimental evaluation, to demonstrate in a practical setting the claimed results.
