Research InterestsMy broad research interests are the acquisition, development, and use of spoken and written language, from infancy to adulthood, as it occurs both typically and atypically. I am especially interested in spelling development, and in how children learn to represent grammatical patterns in their spelling, based on rules which tell us that, for example, past-tense verbs take "-ed" but nouns do not ("missed" vs. "mist") or that plural nouns take "-s" but singular nouns do not ("rows" vs. "rose"). More recently I have begun to look at adults' strategies for making the most of such spelling rules, and this year I've been awarded a grant from the University of Tasmania's Institutional Grants Scheme to run an intervention study on this question. University students will take part in several short, game-like sessions that aim to improve their use of grammar-based spelling rules. I am also involved in collaborations with colleagues in Canada on the early predictors of language delay (University of British Columbia), and on spelling strategies in adults who seem to have "overcome" a childhood diagnosis of dyslexia (University of Alberta).
