Research InterestsMy research concerns human and machine language processing. I have published in a variety of areas including visual word recognition, speech perception, second language learning, semantic processing using PET, dichotic listening and text-to-speech systems. I am currently engaged in several projects including neuropsychological, developmental, neuroscientific and cross-linguistic investigations of the processing of lexical stress and more generally, reading processes. From 2007 I will be funded by two external ARC grants. Recent publications include: "Arciuli & Cupples (2006). The processing of lexical stress during visual word recognition: Typicality effects and orthographic correlates. QJEP, 59:5, 920-948" and "Arciuli & Slowiaczek (2007). The where and when of linguistic word level prosody. Neuropsychologia, 45, 2638-2642". Current international collaborators include Prof K Hugdahl (Norway), Prof P Monaghan (UK), Prof Slowiaczek (Maine, USA) and Prof Rhea Paul (USA). I have several years experience in industry working on ASR and TTS systems and on user-centred dialog design for voice recognition applications in Australia (Holly Australia) and in London (Dimension Data, UK).
