Research InterestsMy research interests largely revolve around information retrieval for specific applications. My main topic is music information retrieval, in which I examine techniques for retrieving music from a collection, given music queries such as melody fragments, chord sequences, or audio examples for stylistic and mood matches. Related to this topic is my interest in recommender system technology, in which different types of evidence (ratings, demographic data, audio similarity) are combined to best recommend new music to users. My other main interest is computer-assisted language learning. Within this field I'm interested in techniques for building tools that make use of the web as a corpus for recommending reading (readability), and for presenting concordances that represent language usage.
