Research Interests

My research interests have included the investigation of the computational modelling of language change, machine translation, grammar formalisms, grammar development and linguistic engineering, and spoken dialogue systems. After receiving a PhD in linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania, I became a computational linguist in industry, first in a machine translation company and then at Wang Laboratories (USA), then as a researcher at ISSCO in Switzerland, before taking the position of lecturer in Computational Linguistics at the University of Melbourne. I joined Syrinx Speech Systems to head the Natural Language Processing group and lead the R&D project to develop a natural language telephone dialogue system. As a Senior Research Scientist at DSTO, I continued work on spoken dialogue systems, in the context of multi-media interaction, and on MT tools. As Senior Manager (Projects and Research) at Appen in Sydney, I oversaw the research in language processing and led the projects on Text Attribution (TAT) and Data Stream Profiling (DSP).

I am now an Honorary Associate at the University of Sydney, where I teach syntax courses. Since 2008, I have been chairing the Steering Committee of the Australian Computational and Linguistics Olympiad (OzCLO). OzCLO is an annual competition for high school students which was first made possibe in 2008 through a grant from HCSNet and has now been established Australia-wide. In addition to the traditional linguistics problems, OzClO endeavors to introduce students to computational problem solving as it relates specifically to natural language data. For more information please visit the website:http://www.ozclo.org.au.

My current research aims to investigate communication problems in the aviation environment, in particular radio communication between Air Traffic Control and pilots whose first language is not English, and to assess the use of language technologies to mitigate them.
