Research Interests

I'm interested in the nature of language transformations, and models of these. The language transformations are of various types: the transformations between languages and the structures that are used to represent them (e.g. syntax trees), as occurs in machine translation; the transformations between different expressions of similar semantic content within a language, as in paraphrasing; and the transformation of a language over time. Within these domains, I am looking at the properties of synchronous formalisms that are used to model these transformations; the ability of these formalisms to represent transformations that occur in natural languages; and the use of agent-based models as alternatives, particularly in language change.
