Research InterestsI am interested in understanding how music is produced and how it is cognised. I use techniques of empirical psychology to assess the impact of broad musical features such as intensity, and of highly specific structural devices in composition (such as the inclusion of animistic sounds). on perception of musical change and affect. I use techniques of time series analysis in depth to complement conventional statistical analyses. In my creative work, which develops alongside my research, I seek efficient computational means for real-time generation of complex (and long term) musical and sonic structure, using MAX/MSP/Jitter and general programming languages. I am also interested in real-time verbal interactivity on a computer or web interface, and extending algorithmic control of text selection, manipulation and output in response to user input, to control of sound files in an analogous way.
