Research Interests

My research interests are in the areas of Audio-Visual speech perception; Language Development and Language Processing. I am currently involved in four major research projects: 1) Audio-visual Speech Processing: To examine the ways that speech is processed in face-to-face settings and how such multimodal processing provides a rich framework for communication. 2) Cross linguistic research: The broad aim of this research is to determine the processes by which people learn first spoken, and then written language in more that a single language. A related research program involves that investigation of reading disorders in languages other than English. 3) The development of word recognition skills in children: In partnership with a number of colleagues I am currently conducting a large-scale longitudinal study of reading and spelling development in children. 4) Basic processes in speech and language.
