Research InterestsGillian Wigglesworth has a wide range of research interests which broadly include both first and second language acquisition, language testing and assessment, and bilingualism. With Dr. Jane Simpson from the University of Sydney, she is currently working on a large scale ARC funded research project entitled “How mixed language input affects child language development: case studies from Central Australia”. In this project, the language input to children is being examined in three Indigenous communities. This study is investigating the complex language input situation Indigenous children encounter, and its effect on the children’s language acquisition. She is also working on two studies related to second language acquisition. The first, also ARC funded, is investigating the efficacy of different types of feedback to second language learners, working either in pairs or individually, on their writing. The other focuses on the differences between the complex requests made by native speakers and non native speakers, focussing on the use of mitigation. She has several edited book publications, and numerous journal articles and book chapters reflecting her research interests.
