Research InterestsMy current research follows a number of strands: • Grammatical change in Germanic languages: Increasingly research has focused on the occurring linguistic changes, and sociolinguistic aspects, of the Pennsylvania German spoken by the Anabaptist communities in Canada. • Together with Keith Allan the investigation into euphemism, dysphemism and the linguistic taboo: Current research includes political correctness and language purism as manifestations of taboo. • Structure and history of English: Increasingly, this work has been exploring popular perceptions about language, an interest which has grown out of on-going media work, in particular talk-back radio.
