Research Interests

My research is focused primarily in the field of information retrieval and related areas. Current projects include: * Evaluation of IR systems, investigating whether widely used metrics for measuring search performance reflect the actual search experience of users, and exploring alternative evaluation approaches. * Prediction of query difficulty, aiming to estimate in advance whether a query is likely to return a useful set of answers. The idea is to explore how a retrieval system can be made more dynamic, for example by choosing different retrieval models, or by selectively applying search refinement techniques such as relevance feedback. * More broadly, I'm involved in a range of projects within the Search Engine Group at RMIT University, including enterprise search and authoring support, cross-lingual IR and transliteration, music retrieval, interactive question answering, and using past search data to improve search effectiveness.
