Research InterestsMy research focuses on developmental disorders, including autism, Williams syndrome, and Down syndrome. I am currently working on an ARC project entitled “Cognitive and neural causes of language impairment in autism”. One thread of this project considers the hypothetical link between language difficulties, context-processing, and neural connectivity in autism. Together with Prof Kate Nation (Oxford), I am using eye-tracking to test claims that individuals with autism fail to process words in context. With Dr Blake Johnson (Macquarie), I am conducting an MEG study of the neural basis of semantic context effects. A second thread explores the overlap between autism and specific language impairment. With Dr Lisa Archibald (Western Ontario), I aim to determine whether children with autism fail nonword repetition tasks for the same reasons as those with SLI. With Dr Genevieve McArthur (Macquarie) and Prof Christiana Leonard (Florida), I will investigate auditory brain responses and structural differences in auditory cortex in the two disorders.
