Research Interests

Most of my research interests have something to do with symbolic machine learning. My PhD research was on Alignment-Based Learning (ABL), a grammatical inference (GI) system that finds structure in unstructured natural language (a set of sentences). This approach is now being used in other areas as well, such as morphology, machine translation, musicology and formal GI. I am interested in applications of GI systems in these different fields. Also, I am a founding member of the grammatical inference community (ICGI) and I am involved with the GI competitions: Omphalos and Tenjinno.

At the moment, I work as a research fellow in the AnswerFinder project, where we develop a question answering (QA) system. We focus mainly on symbolic approaches within QA. In this context, I apply symbolic machine learning approaches to classify questions, select relevant text fragments and find exact answers within sentences.

Error correction is one of my other research interests. I am not only interested in error correction in compilers, but also in natural language, in particular spelling checkers. I've worked on spelling checkers for Afrikaans, but I'm also interested in corpus-based spelling correction.
