Research InterestsWith a background in music psychology, my current research investigates listeners' perception of sound structure in music. Specifically, I am exploring human perception and cognition of macrostructure in digital music. Early results from my involvement in this project can be found in Bailes, F. & Dean, R. T. (4-6 August, 2005). 'Structural judgements in the perception of computer-generated music' Proceedings of the 2nd International Conference of Asia Pacific Society for the Cognitive Science of Music, Seoul, Korea. pp. 155-160. This project is progressing to relate detected sonic structures to the emotional response patterns of listeners. My main research interests lie in the field of musical imagery (the imagined auditory experience of music, or the conscious 'inner hearing' of music). Given the essentially private and internal nature of musical imagery, ingenuity is required in its investigation, and as such I have combined experiment, experience sampling, interview, observation, questionnaire and case study techniques. My work on the everyday 'tune on the brain' has been accepted for publication in 'Musicae Scientiae' and 'Psychology of Music'. Current research projects include: Real-time generation of detectable musical macrostructure, Real-time emotional response to computer-generated music, The 'ramp archetype', Implicit and explicit mental representations of musical structure, Imaging timbre Representative Publicationshttps://kb.osu.edu/dspace/bitstream/1811/24476/1/EMR000019a-Bailes.pdf
