Research InterestsMy research interests stem from a fascination with how children learn to speak. I'm particularly interested in the 'fis' phenomenon – how children can say words in their own way and think they are saying them in the adult way (e.g., "No, not fis, I said fis!"). While most children's speech can be clearly understood by the time they are 4 years-old, some children struggle to intelligibly communicate what they think – a problem a speech pathologist might diagnose as a phonological impairment. I'm interested in the efficacy of intervention for phonological impairment in children. Within the area of intervention, I'm interested in the influence of phonological analysis on target selection and phonological generalization, the relationship between articulation and phonology, and predicting treatment progress rates for children with phonological impairment. I'm also interested in the interaction between the lexicon and the phonological system as children learn to talk, and how speech pathologists implement research findings into everyday clinical practice.
