Research InterestsLanguages vary enormously in the way they construe and package meaning through their words, grammar and prosodies. A very high proportion of the vocabulary and phraseology of any language lacks precise equivalents in other languages of the world. Meanings are notoriously slippery customers, however, and there is no consensus yet within linguistics and allied disciplines about the optimal methodology for describing meanings within or across languages. My research is conducted within one of the most long-standing and comprehensive systems on the contemporary scene: the Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) approach orignated by Anna Wierzbicka. This uses as its notation for meaning description a small "mini-language" of simple word-meanings (known as semantic primes) which evidence indicates can be found in all human languages. The metalanguage of semantic primes, which also includes a well-specified grammar of combination, has proved itself to be an invaluable practical tool for documenting of the extensive variation in meanings across languages. Equally the metalanguage of universal semantic primes has proven itself a valuable tool for exploring the many ways in which communication practices are "cultural shaped". This is the research area which has lately been termed ethnopragmatics. It studies how the production and interpretation of speech is guided by implicit shared norms, also known as cultural scripts.
