Research Interests

I am a senior lecturer in the Department of Information Systems at the University of Melbourne. My research interests are in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Interaction Design. My research aims to understand the use of emerging ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) for the purpose of designing useful, usable and satisfying technology. I do this by envisioning new technological uses through user-centred methods, devising tools for translating the envisionment into designs, and creating products that can evolve and be evaluated through situated use. The scope of my research is illustrated by a few recent projects. The 'Mediating Intimacy' project investigated role of technology to support strong-tie relationships especially through non-instrumental exchanges. The 'Integer-generational Play' project investigated technologies for supporting playful activity between grandparents and grandchildren who were separated by distance. The 'OnTrac' project investigated the use of mobile internet to build social support for young people with cancer. These projects demonstrate my interest user-centred field work to envision new technology for social and domestic purposes. I completed my PhD in Human-Computer Interaction at the University of Melbourne, and now lead the Interaction Design Group, a thriving research group of academics and graduate students.
