Research Interests

Bill Thompson is Professor of Psychology, Macquarie University. His 2009 book “Music, Thought and Feeling” (Oxford University Press) is a leading textbook on the psychology of music. He is Editor of the journal Empirical Musicology Review, Associate Editor for the journals Music Perception and Semiotica, and past-president of the Society for Music Perception and Cognition (SMPC). His research concerns perceptual, cognitive, and emotional aspects of music. Current research concerns how mental representations of emotional and structural characteristics of music are mapped onto facial movements of musicians. Such expressions begin before sound production and extend beyond the cessation of sound, creating an umbrella of structural and emotional information that surrounds and supports the sonic dimension of music. Such visual signals interact with perception, influencing how listeners perceive dissonance, interval size, and emotional tone. Thompson also studies the effects of manipulating basic auditory parameters in music, such as pace, intensity, and pitch height. Such manipulations have similar effects in music and speech, and may be associated with common neural areas.
