Research Interests

My research interests are in semantics, ontolinguistics, and the relationship between language and cognition. I developed a representational system for verbal semantics that draws heavily on the object-oriented Unified Modeling Language (UML), the de-facto standard for software design and analysis. I am currently looking at ways to extend my system - called Unified Eventity Representation (UER) - to address questions of compositional semantics and discourse representation. Another area of interest is ontolinguistics (ontology-based linguistics). In particular, I am developing an ontology of grammaticalised psychosocial categories and how they are grammaticalised across languages, as part of the ARC Discovery Project "Social cognition and language: the design resources of grammatical diversity".
