Research Interests

The aim of my research is to investigate what happens during the process of turning thoughts into words. Homophones, words that sound the same but differ in meaning (e.g., money ?bank? & river ?bank?), have been used to investigate how many separate stages are involved in word processing. So far, I carried out a treatment study with two aphasic individuals, in which it was tried to improve their ability to name pictures of homographic homophones (e.g. ?ring?/?ring?), when only one homophone partner had been treated. A treatment study including only heterographic homophones (e.g. ?flower?/?flour?) is currently in preparation. An approach investigating normal speech is undertaken by using the Tip of the Tongue state as a window, from which word retrieval and the relative order of access to phonological and syntactic information can be observed.
