Willem van SteenbruggeUsername: Willem van SteenbruggeParticipant details
Research InterestsI completed a Masters Degree in General Linguistics at the University of Amsterdam in the early 1980s and was influenced by inspiring academics like Ron Prins (Aphasia/Psycholinguistics), Rene Appel (Bilingualism), Simon Dik (Functional Grammar), Bernard Tervoort (Sign language/Total Communication), and Catherine Snow (Psycholinguistics). My PhD research focussed on language processing in late bilingualism (an ERP-study) and was supervised by Professor Richard Clark (Psychology/Flinders University). My overall research interest is the study of language processing which is pursued in four domains: (bilingual) aphasia, (bilingual) dementia, right-hemisphere brain injury and bilingualism. The research on bilingual aphasia and dementia is focussed on (residual) language abilities in the two languages and cross-linguistic differences in language processing. The research on right-hemisphere brain injury focuses on difficulties with activation/suppression and priming at word and sentence level. The research on bilingualism is focussed on cross-language activation at word and sentence level. I also take a keen interest in the research conducted by my research students, for example auditory processing disorder and language ability, phonological awareness and language/reading ability, and early therapy/intervention for individuals with severe aphasia.
