Diane Hughes, Macquarie University

spotlight participant

Research area: Singing Voice, Vocal Pedagogy - Singing, voice, music education, vocal pedagogy, vocal assessment

Diane Hughes has an extensive background in contemporary popular singing pedagogy, and has been an invited speaker at national conferences and seminars on a range of issues relating to contemporary popular singing. Her work within the industry has involved artist development and recording. Research interests include contemporary popular singing, vocal pedagogy, vocal assessments, vocal performance and singing in schools; current research projects include peer and self assessment, group assessment, improvisation and creative practices in music theatre studies, and the implementation and development of the vocal journal. Research on singing in schools (2007) has lead Diane to become an advocate for the development of cross-curriculum voice studies in primary and secondary schools through which students may be afforded an understanding of voice function, voice health, voice care and offered strategies for dealing with transitioning voices. Cross-curriculum areas involve units of work in Health and Physical Education (HPE), Science, English, Drama and Creative Arts/Music.
