Participant Spotlight
Mel Goodale, University of Western Ontario Research area: NeuropsychologyProfessor Mel Goodale holds the Canada Research Chair in Visual Neuroscience at the University of Western Ontario. He is best known for his work on the functional organization of the visual pathways in the cerebral cortex, and was a pioneer in the study of visuomotor control in neurological patients. His recent research uses functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to look at the activity in the normal human brain as it performs different kinds of visual tasks. His recent book with David Milner, ‘Sight Unseen: An Exploration of Conscious and Unconscious Vision' (Oxford University Press), provides compelling arguments that the brain mechanisms underlying our conscious visual experience of the world are quite separate from those involved in the visual control of skilled actions. These ideas not only have implications for our understanding visual deficits in neurological patients, but also offer some new directions for the design of robots and artificial visual systems.
NewsSummerFest '09 Summer School: The Functional Organization of the Central Visual Pathways
Mel Goodale, this week's spotlight is presenting a Summer School course at this year's SummerFest. Visual systems first evolved not to enable animals to see, but to provide distal sensory control of their movements. Vision as 'sight' is a relative newcomer on the evolutionary landscape, but its emergence has enabled animals to carry out complex cognitive operations on representations of the world. In the more ancient visuomotor systems, there is a basic isomorphism between visual input and motor output. In representational vision, there are many cognitive ‘buffers’ between input and output – and the relationship between what is on the retina and the behaviour cannot be understood without reference to other mental states. The duplex nature of vision is reflected in the organization of the visual pathways in the primate cerebral cortex. The dorsal 'action' stream projecting from early visual areas to the parietal lobe mediates the visual control of skilled motor acts. The ventral 'perceptual' stream projecting from early visual areas to the temporal lobe provides the rich and detailed representation of the world required for cognitive operations. Last Chance to Register: HCSNet Workshop on Movement and Motion Capture
Motion capture is now recognised as a powerful technology for understanding the science of human movement and its relation to human cognition. This workshop will bring together leading and emerging researchers using cutting edge technology in motion capture to foster cross-disciplinary collaboration. The workshop will also provide opportunity for participants to engage in demonstrations and tutorials using Vicon facilities housed in Macquarie University’s Music, Sound and Performance (MSP) Laboratory and Optotrak equipment in the Action and Cognition Laboratory housed in the Macquarie Centre for Cognitive Science. To find out more and register please go to: http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/hcsnetevents/2009/movmotcap09.
Call for Papers: The Australasian Document Computing Symposium 2009
ADCS 2009 is an opportunity for researchers and practitioners in document management and information retrieval to meet and present their work. The symposium aims to cover all aspects of Document Computing - issues ranging from the fundamentals of document architectures and standards for markup, through storage, management, retrieval, authentication and workflow, to active and virtual documents. The symposium will emphasize both commercial and academic issues by encouraging a variety of submissions. This year ADCS 2009 will be part of our SummerFest'09 program, find out more here: http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/summerfest09/adcs09.
SummerFest '09 Early Bird Registration Now Open!
Early Bird Registration will open on the 7th September. Registration fees include lunch vouchers on the days of attendance, tea and coffee breaks, summer school course notes and workshop proceedings. Registered attendees can also purchase significantly subsidised conference dinner tickets at $60 ($30 for students). For details please go to: http://sf09.hcsnet.edu.au/summerfest09/registrationfees.

NAL Presentation - Saving Kids' Hearing: Where do we begin?
NAL is pleased to have Dr William Martin visiting us on Monday 14th September. Billy is Professor of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery and Professor of Public Health & Preventive Medicine at the Oregon Health & Science University in Portland and has a wealth of experience in health promotion research.
One of his many hats includes Director of the Dangerous Decibels Program (http://www.dangerousdecibels.org)- a health promotion campaign designed to reduce the incidence of Noise Induced Hearing loss, by raising awareness and educating school-aged children. His work in this area has received international interest and we are delighted to have him sharing some of his knowledge with us.
To this end, Billy will be presenting "Saving Kids' Hearing: Where do we begin?" on Monday 14th September at 2pm in the lecture theatre on level 1, 126 Greville Street, Chatswood. We invite you to join this discussion and to pass this invite on to anyone you believe may be interested in meeting Billy or learning more about this work.
