Research area: Cognitive Neuropsychology of Language

Lyndsey Nickels is Associate Professor and NHMRC Senior Research Fellow at Macquarie University's Macquarie Centre for Cognitive Science. Her research field can be broadly characterised as "the cognitive neuropsychology of language". In other words, she investigates language impairments (both developmental and acquired as a result of brain damage) and uses these to test the adequacy of cognitive models of language comprehension and production. For example, recent research has included an examination whether a current computational model of reading could, when 'lesioned' simulate the patterns of reading shown by individuals with reading disorders following stroke. However, not only can language impairments inform cognitive theories, but also theories can inform our understanding of the nature of language impairments and help identify how best to remediate them. Hence, a major focus of Lyndsey's research is the assessment and treatment of acquired language impairment (aphasia)and impaired literacy (dyslexia) in children and adults. One strand of this research has focused on treatments for the difficulties people with aphasia have in retrieving the words they want to say and whether one type of task might be more effective than another.

SummerFest '09 Summer School: Acquired Language Disorders: how can they help us understand spoken word production?

Lyndsay Nickels, this week's spotlight, is presenting a Summer School course at this year's SummerFest. The course examines how the ways in which language breaks down after brain damage can inform our understanding of language processing in unimpaired individuals. This approach is known as cognitive neuropsychology; the course will illustrate how language impairment can test and develop theories in ways which both complement and extend data from experimental studies with individuals with intact language. The course will begin with a brief introduction to aphasia (acquired language disorder), giving an overview of the major symptoms and how they vary from person to person. It will then outline some of the major controversies in theories of spoken word production and demonstrate how language impairments can help discriminate between different theoretical accounts. Find out more about the complete Summer School program here: http://sf09.hcsnet.edu.au/summerfest09/summerschool.

Free SummerFest 2009 Registration for Nominated Undergraduates

For this year's SummerFest, which will be held in Sydney from November 30th to December 4th, we have a target of attracting 200 exceptional undergraduate (second, third or fourth year) students who are likely to go on to a research career; this is a great opportunity to attend a unique event that exposes students to interdisciplinary training and research, and lets them start networking early in their careers. Active HCSNet members have already provided names to fill more than half the available nomination slots; this is a last call to the wider membership before we close this part of the process. If you would like to nominate up to three students to be considered for free registration, please send their names and email addresses to ky.buckley@uws.edu.au no later than Monday 31st August.

Keynote Speaker: HCSNet Workshop on Social Technology Applications for Health and Medicine

Patty Kostkova is Head of the City eHealth Research Centre at the City University, London. Patty will be giving a talk entitled "Online Communities of Practise and Social Networking – What is the Potential?” This talk will address the issues surrounding the Internet delivery of medical knowledge to the public and professionals, online communities for evidence-based quality assurance and the need for a personalisation and user profiling. Social networking with an increasing amount of user-generated content provides highly accessible sources of real-time information for early warning systems (such as infection outbreaks) and can allow better understanding of public concerns about their health.

We will draw from the experience with the development and evaluation of the National electronic library of Infection (NeLI) http://www.neli.org.uk and international projects hosted by this infection portal accessed by over 400 000 users per month, and the recent study using Twitter to investigate user concerns about swine flu.

We intend this workshop to be a place to foster communication across the relevant disciplines in order to design and develop effective tools and user experience to support online health communities. Registration for this workshop closes on the 7th of September, to find out more about the workshop and the keynote speaker please visit: http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/hcsnetevents/2009/socialtechnology09.

New Registration Date: HCSNet Workshop on Mobile Applications for Communication Disorders

This workshop is designed to facilitate communication between different disciplines in order to initiate the collaborative development of new mobile applications for communications disorders. As this field is in it's infancy, the primary focus of the workshop will be on identifying and understanding the potential of this new technology and determining possible clinical applications. Another focus will be currently developed tools or uses of mobiles and their possible applications in these populations.

This workshop will be held in conjuction with the HCSNet Workshop on Social Technology Applications for Health and Medicine. The new registration date is 7th September, 2009. To find out more and register please go to: http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/hcsnetevents/2009/hcdeii-macd.
