Participant Spotlight
Britta Biedermann, Macquarie University Research area: PsycholinguisticsThe aim of my research is to investigate what happens during the process of turning thoughts into words. Homophones, words that sound the same but differ in meaning (e.g. money bank & river bank), have been used to investigate how many separate stages are involved in word processing.
So far, I carried out a treatment study with two aphasic individuals, in which it was tried to improve their ability to name pictures of homographic homophones (e.g. ring/ring), when only one homophone partner had been treated. A treatment study including only heterographic homophones (e.g. flower/flour) is currently in preparation.
An approach investigating normal speech is undertaken by using the Tip of the Tongue state as a window, from which word retrieval and the relative order of access to phonological and syntactic information can be observed.
NewsSpotlight Correction - Professor Anne Castles
In our last issue we spotlit Professor Ann Castles and incorrectly stated she was at the University of Melbourne. Professor Castles has moved from the University of Melbourne and is currently a Research Professor at the Macquarie Centre for Cognitive Science at Macquarie University.
Summer School Course on Language and Learning to Read at SummerFest ‘08
Anne Castles will be teaching a course at this year’s SummerFest. The course begins by asking what language is and whether the capacity for language is specific to human beings; it considers what the properties of language are, and focuses particularly on its capacity for symbolic representation. The course then distinguishes between spoken and written language and examines the typical process of development of both of these abilities. The latter part of the course moves on to examine different kinds of impairments in reading and language, and explores in depth some current issues and controversies in this domain. If you haven’t already registered for SummerFest and this course, go to it! http://sf08.hcsnet.edu.au
