Word Structure Summer School Course at SummerFest '08
Laurie Bauer, this week's spotlight, is presenting a course in the summer
schools at this year's HCSNet SummerFest. Here's what he has to say about
it: 'Linguistic morphology deals with the ways in which words are made up of
smaller meaningful elements, so that in 'unfriendliness' we can find the
elements divided by hyphens in 'un-friend-li-ness'. Each of these elements
is recurrent elsewhere in the language with the same meaning. In this course
we will begin by looking at the range of patterns that are found in human
language, and then look specifically at the morphology of English, and some
of the problems that arise in trying to describe and explain the way in
which English morphology functions. We will consider such questions as
binarity of structures, the marking of parts of speech (word-classes) and
the limitations of stringing elements together.' Come to SummerFest and
find out more -- pre-register your interest in this summer school course at

Music and Movements in Indonesian Culture Conference and Workshops 7-9 October 2008
Music and dance offer doorways into other cultures and windows into the various forms of mental processing that have evolved around the world. The Music and Movements in Indonesian Culture Conference and Workshops next month brings together researchers, artists and academics from a variety of fields. With a light mixture of morning research presentations and afternoon workshops the event promises to be fun and informative. The conference will be opened by Member of the Order of Australia, Professor Margaret Kartomi on 7th of October. We also have guest lecturers and workshop hosts from around Australia, France and Indonesia. The workshops are an opportunity to learn Acehnese body percussion, participate in Javanese Dance, practice some moves of Pencak Silat and get involved in a special workshop teaching the central concept of almost all Indonesian music, Interlocking. Be sure not to miss the traditional performances on the first night!
