HCSNet Update Newsletter Volume 4 Number 19Tuesday, 13th May 2008
In this issueParticipant SpotlightAndrew Lampert, CSIRO
Research area: Natural Language ProcessingIn general, I work in the area of context-sensitive search and delivery of information, focusing on the information delivery side. We exploit the context of user interactions (e.g., information about the user, their task, the environment, the domain of application, the user's previous history of interaction) to adapt how information is retrieved, organised, and presented to the user. My PhD work is looking at how to improve the way people manage and track tasks in email communication. Specifically, I'm working to create tools that assist email users by automatically detecting requests and commitments in incoming and outgoing email and focusing the user's attention on requests and commitments that remain unfulfilled.

See details of the PhD scholarship available in the lab at http:// www.phys.unsw.edu.au/jw/sships.html . International Visitors in 2007We'd like to include information on international visitors of interest to the HCSNet community on our website. If you are aware of visits planned for 2008, please send details to mailto:newsletter@hcsnet.edu.au. And we'd remind you that HCSNet provides funding for an International Visiting Speaker Program whereby speakers give a talk, seminar or colloquium at a host institution and, to engage HCSNet people around Australia, at two additional venues around the country. Further details on the program are available at http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/programs/internationalspeakers . HCSNet Priority Area: Effective InterfacesOver the last two years, HCSNet's activities have been focussed around a number of Priority Areas (PAs) where we see significant scope for interdisciplinary interaction. Here's what Lawrence Cavedon, one of the leaders of HCSNet's Human Effective Interfaces PA, has to say about his area: "As our technology gets more complex, so do the interfaces we use to communicate with that technology. Communication breakdown in these interfaces is evident all around us: video recorder remote controls with functionalities too complex to understand, and repeated frustration at call-centre automation via less than perfect speech recognition, are two very visible instances. At the same time, humans are more complex than any devices we have yet created, but we communicate with each other effortlessly. This research priority area focuses on what it is that makes a human-computer interface, particularly one where speech is used as the mode of communication, effective." If you're interested in Effective Interfaces, make sure you've indicated this interest in your HCSNet profile so that you receive mailings about the activities of the PA. Also see the Priority Areas web pages at http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/priorityareas for more information. Upcoming SeminarsWe list here upcoming seminars that are happening in the next month.
