In this issueParticipant SpotlightMartin Luerssen, Flinders University of South Australia
Research area: - Artificial IntelligenceMy main research interests lie in computational intelligence and nature-inspired computing, including autonomous optimisation, neural networks, and artificial life. I completed a Ph.D. in Evolutionary Computation, which involved class-leading research and the development of new algorithms for grammar evolution and evolutionary design. As a contributor to the Thinking Head project, I am applying my knowledge to the related domains of embodied conversational agents, social computing, computer vision, and ambient intelligence.

Based on the Bio21 program run in Melbourne, this scheme is designed to introduce motivated undergraduate students into an active research environment early in their academic career. Students will undertake part-time employment, for at least 6 months, on projects embedded in larger research projects being run in HCS laboratories. For researchers the scheme provides the opportunity to employ and work with highly motivated and competent students with expertise either within or outside and complementing the researcher’s specific discipline; and for the students the scheme provides the opportunity for part-time work in an area related to their studies, integrated into a research program. Initially the program will be run in Sydney, and may be extended geographically at a later date. If you would like further information, or would like to participate in the scheme as an employer, please contact Mel Gallagher ( m.gallagher@uws.edu.au). HCSNet SummerFest 2008 DatesSummerFest is HCSNet’s annual flagship event, where over 200 people from the diverse range of disciplines that make up Human Communication Science get together for a week to stretch their brains. We’ve finalised the dates for this year’s SummerFest: Monday December 1st to Friday December 5th 2008. We’ll be experimenting with some changes this year, keeping what works well and making improvements on the basis of our past experience: you can look forward to bigger and even better summer school courses, a revitalised speed papers program, and workshops that focus on a range of areas that cut across the HCSNet disciplines. Watch this space for more information, and mark those dates in your diary now! CongratulationsWe would like to congratulate our Website Coordinator Ben Phelan who was married last week, we wish him and his bride Elle the very best for the future. We would also like to welcome the newest member of the HCSNet family Gabrielle Mae, born to our HCSNet Administrative Coordinator in 2007 Kym Buckley. Congratulations Kym, all the very best wishes to you and your family. Upcoming Submission DeadlinesWe list here upcoming submission deadlines that fall in the next month.
