Participant Spotlight

Kristen Pammer, Australian National University

Research area: - Neuropsychology

Reading and reading disorders, visual perception, Magnetoencephalographic neuroimaging: My primary research interests involve investigation into the perceptual bases for specific reading and language disorders, and the dynamics of reading networks in reading and dyslexia. Unrelated to reading, I am also interested in neural mechanisms of visual search and visuo-spatial attention, as well as multi-modal integration and synaesthesia. From 2000-2003 I worked in a postdoctoral position in Newcastle England, during this time, I had had the privilege to work in two of the most pre-eminent Magnetoencephalographic (MEG) brain imaging laboratories in the world; the Aston MEG lab at Wellcome Trust laboratory for MEG studies, Neurosciences Research Institute, Aston University, and the MEG lab in the Low Temperature Laboratory at Helsinki University of Technology. At the Aston lab I worked with a new analysis technique – Synthetic Aperture Magnetometry (SAM) to investigate the early spatial and temporal dynamics involved in word recognition. I then worked for six months in Helsinki investigating behavioural and cortical consistency on speeded reading tasks, using another new analysis technique developed in the Low Temperature laboratory, designed to estimate coherence over cortical networks. I recently spent some time working in Japan in the Laboratory for Human Brain Dynamics at the RIKEN Institute studying synaesthesia. I now hold a teaching position in the School of Psychology at the Australian National University.

Joint HCSNet-EII Workshop on Interactive and Ubiquitous Information Access: Call for Participation

HCSNet and the ARC Research Network in Enterprise Information Infrastructure (EII) Taskforce on Mobility and Accessing Information Infrastructures (MAII) (http://www.eii.edu.au/taskforce0607/maii) are organising a joint workshop on Interactive and Ubiquitous Information Access to be held at NICTA, the Australian Technology Park, Sydney on 16 and 17 May 2008. This workshop is designed to bring together researchers in designing systems, methodologies, infrastructure, and interactive interfaces for information access in mobile and/or ubiquitous environments. HCSNet will fund travel for a number of Australian participants from outside the Sydney area. Invited speakers: Mike Twidale; Diane Kelly; Kenton O'Hara.

For more information, please go to http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/hcsnetevents/2008/iuiaworkshop. To register interest, please email lawrence.cavedon@rmit.edu.au as soon as possible.

HCSNet Workshop on Narrative and Communication Disorders

This is advance notice of a date for your diaries: HCSNet's Human Communication Disorders Priority Area is hosting a workshop on 13-14 September 2008 at The University of Melbourne.

The aim of the workshop is to bring together Australian and international researchers with an interest in narrative and communication disorders. The workshop will address developmental and acquired disorders of both child and adult language and perspectives from neurotypical populations; it will consider topics in theory, methodology and analysis. The intention is to take a truly interdisciplinary approach, involving speakers and participants from a range of areas covered by the broad domain of cognitive science, and to generate fruitful leads and directions for further research. Thus we expect that researchers from linguistics, psychology, speech pathology, psychiatry, computer science, cognitive neuroscience and other areas will find the workshop of interest. Interested researchers are invited to submit 200-250 word abstracts for paper or poster presentations by 2nd June 2008. The workshop website will be advertised soon.

For further information, contact Associate Professor Lesley Stirling lesleyfs@unimelb.edu.au or Dr Susan Douglas sdouglas@unimelb.edu.au.
