HCSNet Update Newsletter Volume 4 Number 10Tuesday, 11th March 2008
In this issueParticipant SpotlightSusan Douglas, La Trobe University
Research area: Linguistics - PsycholinguisticsMy research interests are centred on child language acquisition, with a particular interest in the relationship between linguistic and cognitive development. I recently completed my PhD in Linguistics at La Trobe University, investigating the semantic and syntactic development of verbs in the language of children with autism. My research was conducted in two stages: an observational study analysing conversational data of ten children with autism; and a small series of experimental studies testing theory of mind abilities and elicited production of specific sentence types. The analysis of verb use in the language of ten participants with autism revealed that while verb development may be significantly delayed, or even plateau, verb acquisition proceeds in the same manner as typical development in terms of the order of emergence of category types, and there was little evidence to support a theory of atypical development. I am currently a Research Associate on the 'StoryLincs' project led by Associate Professor Lesley Stirling at the University of Melbourne. This is an ARC funded project investigating autism and written narrative. The project website is http://www.autismnarrative.unimelb.edu.au. NewsPriority Areas Leaders' Meeting, 14 and 15 March 2008A reminder that the next Priority Areas Leaders' Meeting will be held on 14 and 15 March 2008 and will be hosted by Rick van der Zwan at Southern Cross University, Coffs Harbour. The meeting will discuss the HCSNet 'Voice' Workshop to be held later in the year, Educational Initiatives including Continuing Professional Development Modules and HCSNet-backed grant applications in 2008. If members would like to see other items raised at this meeting, please let your PA Leader know as soon as possible. Contact details are available here. HCSNet Seminar Support ProgramWe'd like to remind you that HCSNet provides financial support for the organisation of seminars through its Seminar Support Program. The Program aims to bring together researchers who might otherwise not meet as a consequence of both geographical and disciplinary boundaries. Funding of up to $1,000 can be requested for an HCSNet Seminar. This amount is intended to cover airfare and associated accommodation and subsistence costs for the invited speaker, and other costs associated with staging the seminar, such as room hire and provision of refreshments. Please see http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/programs/seminar for more information. Upcoming Submission DeadlinesWe list here upcoming submission deadlines that fall in the next month. A more complete list of submission deadlines can be found here.
