Research area: Evolution of Intelligence

Evolution of anatomically modern humans (AMH) and Neanderthals (supervision of PhD work on human evolution and modelling of origins, with Ms Denise Carrington-Smith). Evolution and origins of speech ability in hominins (modelling speech and proto-speech origins in humans and proto-humans; with Dr David Mills). Evolution, modelling and perception of gait in human and non-human hominoids (with Dr Rick Van Der Zwan and Dr Anna Brooks). Archaeology of gatherer-hunters (comparative studies of societies which subsist on and manage wild foods; evolution of gathering-hunting peoples; early domestication; with Mr Bill Ellwood). Archaeology of northern Australia (living-floor archaeology; direct dating of rock surface accretions; Indigenous rights and heritage; with Dr Mireille Mardaga-Campbell and Dr Alan Watchman). Archaeology of northern Europe (Palaeolithic and later; adaptations to glacial conditions; colonisation of North Atlantic; supervision of PhD work on Last Glacial Maximum; with Mr Nathan Walker). HCSNet International Visiting Speaker Program: Seminars in March 2008

Professor Sharon Oviatt, Incaa Designs, Washington, will be presenting a seminar entitled "Human-Centered Design Meets Cognitive Load Theory: Designing Interfaces that Help People Think" at the University of Melbourne on 3 March and at NICTA, The Australian Technology Park, Sydney on 5 March. Professor Oviatt will also present a seminar entitled "Implicit User-Adaptive System Engagement in Speech, Pen and Multimodal Systems" at the University of Queensland on 4 March. Our thanks to HCSNet local hosts Fang Chen, Penny Sanderson and Frank Vetere for their assistance with Professor Oviatt's visit. HCSNet Workshop Support Program

A reminder that HCSNet provides financial support for the organisation of workshops through its Workshop Support Program. PhD in Personalisation of Enterprise Search Engines, RMIT University

We are seeking a PhD candidate to undertake research in the area of personalisation of enterprise search engines consistent with the program outlined in the funded ARC Linkage Grant "Accurate Context-Aware Search for Managed Document Collections" held by Prof Justin Zobel, Dr Andrew Turpin and Dr Falk Scholer. The successful applicant will enrol in the PhD program offered by the School of Computer Science and Information Technology at RMIT University, and will receive an annual stipend of AUD 24,650. Interaction Design for Children, 11-13 June 2008, Northwestern University in Chicago, USA

Each year, IDC brings together the leading researchers, designers, and developers of children's technology to discuss the challenges, opportunities, and emerging trends in interaction design for children. This year's conference theme is "Think Outside the Toybox," and in addition to sessions on videogames and other toys, IDC08 will have sessions on educational technologies, online communities, assistive technologies, and a special pre-conference workshop on designing for children with disabilities.
