HCSNet Update Newsletter Volume 4 Number 4Tuesday, 29th January 2008
In this issueParticipant SpotlightElzbieta Majocha, University of Western Australia
Research area: e- tools for research in the humanities, historical linguI'm currently working for the Digital Services of the ARC's Network for Early European Research. My work contributes to three projects: construction of a resource discovery service, management of the network wiki implemented in Confluence, and setting up the network's e-repository. The resource discovery service, to be known as "Europa Inventa", will be a web portal directing users to significant early European objects and manuscripts in Australian collections. The site will offer the extensive metadata, which research users will be able to contribute to and update. My first passion is linguistics, in particular, English historical linguistics. One challenge for this field is applying e-tools to Old and Middle English data: digitising source documents, building corpora, locating linguistic evidence geographically. My doctoral thesis at Edinburgh University took up this challenge, balancing Middle English data and e-tools to make sense of it. The task of bringing medieval research into the 21st century is enormous and best tackled by interdisciplinary collaboration specialists. I'd like to build a virtual organisation that fosters this collaboration, and supports research, with the latest e-tools for communication and collaborative research as well as for analysing data.

A list of the grants that fall within the general area of Human Communication Science is available on the HCSNet website here. If you're aware of other recently funded grants that fall within the subject areas covered by HCSNet, please send details to info@hcsnet.edu.au. We compiled our list by identifying HCSNet members who were awarded grants in this Discovery round, but we suspect that there are a number of funded projects in the broad area of human communication science whose chief investigators are not HCSNet members. The aim of the list is to give a general overview of current research in Human Communication Science in Australia. CSIRO ICT Centre, Research Director - Information Engineering Position, CanberraThe CSIRO ICT Centre is building a role for Australia as a global ICT innovator by delivering leading-edge Information and Communication Technology solutions for industry and society. We are seeking to appoint a Research Director of international standing to lead our Information Engineering Laboratory. The successful applicant will have an established international research record in the information or data research, including web services, data management, privacy, natural language processing, user modelling or information retrieval and demonstrated leadership of a significant research group. For more information, please click here; applications close: 18 February 2008. Postdoctoral or Research Fellow Position in the Centre for Health Informatics, UNSWThe Centre for Health Informatics (CHI) at the University of New South Wales is seeking to appoint a highly motivated and experienced researcher, with a background in computational linguistics, computer science or a related area, as a postdoctoral or research fellow to develop and evaluate advanced text mining techniques and apply them in knowledge management applications in the biomedical domain. The CHI is Australia's largest academic health informatics research group conducting fundamental and applied research focusing on the design, evaluation and application of decision-support technologies for healthcare and the biosciences. This position offers an outstanding opportunity to work in a unique multi-disciplinary research environment encompassing information, communication, cognitive and organisational science to support health service and biomedical innovation. An HCSNet FarewellAs of the end of January, Rosemary Eliott will be stepping down from her position as HCSNet Administrator at Macquarie University to go on to other things. Rosemary has provided support for HCSNet Workshops and other events, the weekly newsletter you're reading now, as well as many other behind-the-scenes activities that make the Network run efficiently and effectively. She'll still be helping out on a part-time basis while we find a replacement, but we hope that you'll excuse any temporary lapses or delays in service that arise in the next few weeks. Rosemary will be sadly missed by all of us here at HCSNet. Upcoming Submission DeadlinesWe list here upcoming submission deadlines that fall in the next month. A more complete list of submission deadlines can be found here.
