HCSNet Update Newsletter Volume 4 Number 3Tuesday, 22nd January 2008
In this issueParticipant SpotlightStephen Viller, University of Queensland
Research area: Computer Supported Cooperative WorkMy current research falls within the fields of Ubiquitous Computing, Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) and Human–Computer Interaction (HCI). It is mainly focused on people-centred design methods, and on technologies to support sociability in technology-mediated interaction. The main application areas for this research are distributed collaboration, community interaction, and mobile and ubiquitous technologies, with reflection on the design process itself a common theme in my work. The main challenges that my research addresses within this space are how to adapt existing methods from interaction design and elsewhere so that they are sensitive to the multiple contexts in which people use technology. The ultimate aim of this work is to inform and inspire technology designs for people in their everyday lives, at work, at home, at play, on the move, etc.

Each HCSNet Priority Area is headed by two Priority Area Leaders. In 2008 we are delighted to welcome Dr David Copland from the University of Queensland as a Priority Area Leader in Human Communication Disorders. David's research interests are in the brain mechanisms underpinning normal language, language impairments, and recovery of language after neurological injury. Our thanks to Helen Chenery for her contribution to the Network as a representative on the HCSNet Steering Committee and Priority Area Leader over the period 2005-2007. An overview of Priority Areas, including funded programs and PA leaders, is available at http://www. hcsnet.edu.au/priorityareas/overview. HCSNet Annual Report 2007We're now in the process of putting together HCSNet's Annual Report to the ARC covering our activities in the 2007 calendar year. An important part of this report discusses how the world is different as a consequence of the Network's existence. So, we're looking for comments on how HCSNet has impacted on your research: ideas, interactions, seminar invitations, collaborations, proposals, publications, and anything else that would not otherwise have happened. We'd be very grateful if you could spend a few minutes thinking about this and forward comments to info@hcsnet.edu.au. Thank you!
