HCSNet Update Newsletter Volume 3 Number 48Tuesday, 4th December 2007
In this issueParticipant SpotlightGrace Chung, University of New South Wales
Research area: Natural Language ProcessingMy research interests are in areas of natural language processing and human computer interfaces. I have recently conducted research on natural language applications for the biomedical domain. In particularly, I am interested in using text mining technologies to assist medical practitioners to locate information and evaluate scientific evidence at the point of care. I have been focused on developing information extraction methods that could enhance the practice of Evidenced-based Medicine, by providing up-to-date evidence-based information to medical researchers/practitioners. I am also interested in the use of text mining methods for literature-based knowledge discovery in the biosciences. In the past I have worked for many years on spoken dialogue systems from building subword language models and pronunciation models for speech recognizers to designing dialogue managers. I have worked on algorithms for dynamically incorporating new vocabulary into conversational agents. I am interested in understanding how speech-enabled interfaces can be used in real life applications to assist users in achieving day-to-day tasks, particularly in learning tasks such as learning new languages.

Our thanks to all Summer School presenters and to the student volunteers who provided technical support. At the Student Poster Evening over 25 students gave a short overview of their research - convincing us all to visit their poster - and there was opportunity for informal discussion and feedback. Mikko Sams from Helsinki University of Technology delivered Tuesday's Keynote Presentation entitled 'Learning and Attentive Auditory System'. If you're in the area, you might want to drop by for some or all of the rest of the week; the full program of events for both SummerFest '07 and the International Conference on Music Communication Science (ICoMCS) is available for download here and includes the Speed Papers Session (Wednesday 5 Dec), ICoMCS (Wednesday 5 Dec-Friday 7 Dec), the Forensic Speaker Recognition Workshop (Thursday 6 Dec-Friday 7 Dec) and the Collaboration and Communicative Tools for Distributed Communities Workshop (Thursday 6 Dec-Friday 7 Dec). Onsite registration is $100 per day, and includes the Program, Information and Abstracts Booklet, morning and afternoon tea breaks and lunch. Upcoming Submission DeadlinesWe list here upcoming submission deadlines that fall in the next month. A more complete list of submission deadlines can be found here.
