HCSNet Update Newsletter Volume 3 Number 45Tuesday, 13th November 2007
In this issueParticipant SpotlightHatice Gunes, University of Technology Sydney
Research area: Intelligent Systems - Human-Computer InteractionMy main research focus is on devising automated analysis algorithms to include natural and human-like interactive functions into computers by describing/organising information regarding the state or state transition of individuals (emotional state, activity, position and pose, etc). I am interested in the areas of visual information processing, affective/human computing, multimodal human-computer interaction, image analysis, machine learning and pattern recognition. The aims of my recent research activity have been that of collecting and annotating multimodal affect data, automatically analysing expressive face and body gestures, recognizing affective states from multiple modalities/cues, and fusing these modalities in an effective way. I finished my PhD thesis titled "Vision-based Multimodal Analysis of Affective Face and Upper-body Behaviour" at University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) in 2007. Currently, my focus is on automatic visual surveillance and I am working as a Research Associate on the Australian Research Council (ARC) funded Linkage Project titled "Automatic real-time detection of infiltrated objects for security of airports and train stations" with A/Prof. Massimo Piccardi.

This meeting incorporates a celebration of the first 10 years of the Australian Music & Psychology Society. The aim of the conference is to bring a wide range of presenters together, ranging from students to established researchers with an interest in finding or presenting synergies from several disciplines to help solve problems in music, or to use elements of music and music research to address problems in other disciplines. Please visit http://marcs.uws.edu.au/links/ICoMusic/program.html for the full program, including details of the performance session scheduled for Wednesday 5 December. HCSNet Seminar Support ProgramA reminder that HCSNet provides financial support for the organisation of seminars through its Seminar Support Program. The Program aims to bring together researchers who might otherwise not meet as a consequence of both geographical and disciplinary boundaries. Funding of up to $1,000 can be requested for an HCSNet Seminar and is allocated on the basis of competitive applications. Please see http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/programs/seminar for more information.
