In this issueParticipant SpotlightShlomo Berkovsky, University of Melbourne
Research area: - Human-Computer InteractionMy general research interests are User Modeling and Recommender Systems. My main research interest focuses on achieving a better interoperability of recommender systems via importing and integrating the user modeling data collected by other recommender systems. This process is referred to as Mediation of User Modeling Data. My broader HCI research interests include Ubiquitous User Modeling, Collaborative and Content-Based Filtering, Context-Aware Recommender Systems, Personalized Text Summarization, and use of Machine Learning and Data Mining techniques in User Modeling and Personalization. Besides that, I am interested in Web Mining, Information Retrieval, Semantic Web Applications and P2P Computing. Currently, I am involved in ARC Kubadji project (collaboration between the University of Melbourne and Monash University), investigating the aspects of Personalised Content Delivery in Information Rich Physical Environments. The project focuses on providing museum visit personalization using User Modeling and Natural Language Processing techiques.

Request for information: ARC Discovery Grants 2008HCSNet is seeking information on ARC Discovery Grants commencing in 2008 which are in anyway connected with the activities of the Network as we would like to maintain a central repository of projects in the human communication sciences area on the HCSNet website. We would be grateful if you could please forward details to Rosemary Eliott (reliott@ics.mq.edu.au) by 31 October 2007. Request for Participants for a Study on Novel Distributed Team Collaboration TechnologyThe HxI Initiative between CSIRO, DSTO and NICTA is designing and developing novel group communication technology that enables same-time distributed intense collaboration between teams. The HxI Initiative - [braccetto] Project is seeking volunteers to participate in an exploratory study/experiment about novel remote interaction concepts. The experiment will be held at NICTA, Bay 15, Australian Technology Park, Redfern, Sydney from 29 October - 9 November 2007 and will involve 90 minutes working with a team of 4 people undertaking collaborative decision making in a bush fire survival context. There is a small monetary compensation for participants in this trial of $20. Participants will be providing a valuable contribution to the scientific methods and knowledge in the field of distributed intense collaboration.
