Participant Spotlight

Elizabeth Cardell, University of Queensland

Research area: - Speech Pathology

I have two key research interest areas in communication disorders, i.e., acquired aphasia and stuttering, with the common theme of developing more efficacious treatment techniques. My interest in both areas began as a speech pathology clinician, long before I completed my research masters (semantic treatment efficacy study) and my PhD (online sentence processing). In acquired aphasia, I am particularly interested in the development and application of online assessment and treatment techniques which target both specific language modules as well as the underlying processing scaffolding that supports linguistic processing. Late last year, I was approached to be the 2007 national speaker representative for Speech Pathology Australia and, as a result, I have been been conducting a national tour of workshops in all capital cities, titled "Psycholinguistic Therapies Unplugged: Principles, Processes and Practicalities". In stuttering, I am currently interested in the observation that for bilingual adult clients, current speech restructuring treatments for stuttering frequently show some good generalization from English to European-based languages, but show English-specific effects to some tonal Asian languages. Hence, I hope, next year, to start investigating these effects with view to better understanding how current best practise treatments directly affect speech-motor processes, as well as how current treatments can be modified to suit Asian languages. In addition to research and education, I continue to "keep my hand in", clinically, at the Mater Health Services, Brisbane, working with people who stutter and people with aphasia.
