John Sutton, Macquarie University

Research area: Memory - Philosophy of Cognitive Science

I work on the interdisciplinary study of memory, shuttling between philosophy of mind and the cognitive sciences. As well as an approach informed by history of science (eg in my book Philosophy and Memory Traces: Descartes to connectionism, CUP), I'm now working in collaboration with psychology. With Amanda Barnier, I'm exploring relations between autobiographical memory and collaborative remembering in small groups, seeking a framework in which to understand a range of social memory phenomena; this also involves trying to integrate the social-interactionist tradition in the developmental psychology of autobiographical memory with a positive picture of the various functions played by remembering the past together among adults. This work is guided by the theoretical frameworks of distributed cognition and the extended mind associated with Ed Hutchins, Andy Clark, and others. And with Doris McIlwain, I'm studying the different forms of memory involved in complex acquired movement skills: we're interested in techniques used by experts for influencing themselves in action, in the kinds of embodied intelligence which remains flexibly open to particular circumstances, and we apply the concept of 'instructional nudges' in studies of yoga practice and sport (cricket batting). This work links closely with HCSNet's 'perception and action' priority area. Other current projects include work on dreaming and on point of view in personal memory.

HCSNet Human Communication Disorders Workshop

We would like to thank all participants who attended the HCSNet Workshop: Tough Problems in Human Communication Disorders held at the University of Queensland on 15 September 2007. The workshop brought together researchers, managers and industry leaders to address current or enduring problems, themes, and barriers to communication disorder management and to lay some groundwork towards addressing these questions via interdisciplinary collaboration. A reminder that abstracts are available at http ://www.hcsnet.edu.au/hcsnetevents/2007/hcdworkshop/abstracts. Our thanks to the workshop organisers: Helen Chenery and Elizabeth Cardell.
