Participant Spotlight

Felicity Cox, Macquarie University

Research area: Speech Science and Technology - Phonetics

My primary research interest is the sociophonetic examination of Australian English with particular emphasis on accent variation and change. Two major research projects form the focus of this work and involve analysis of sociostylistic / ethnocultural diversity and evolutionary change in speech production. The first of these projects, the Australian Voices project, is an ongoing and long term endeavour to detail sociodemographic, stylistic and cultural accent variation and ultimately to develop an Australian speech atlas. The second project, the Australian Ancestors project, is an examination of the ontogeny and evolution of the Australian accent focusing on acoustic analysis of archival voice recordings from speakers born in the 19th century. Through this work, we have made substantial ground in detailing sound changes that have occurred in Australian English over the past 100 years. The results of these projects contribute to discussions of Southern Hemisphere English but also address fundamental theoretical questions about the forces that shape sound systems and the nature of variation and change in human language. Our goal is to provide a solid framework for the construction of models to detail the relationship between speech variation and change and offer insights into future developments in human speech production.

HCSNet Workshop on Hearing Prostheses: Reminder Call for Papers and Participation

A reminder that the HCSNet Workshop on Hearing Prostheses will be held on 14 November 2007 at Rydges World Square Hotel, Sydney. The workshop will provide a venue for those interested in the development of hearing prostheses and the issues surrounding their use, with an emphasis on bringing together the technical and practical. We welcome participation from those interested in deafness, hearing impairment, hearing and hearing prostheses from both academia and industry. Deadline for submissions: 24 September; for more information, please visit: http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/hcsnetevents/2007/hpworkshop.

Update on Joint HCSNet-HxI Workshop on Human Issues in Interaction and Interactive Interfaces

The workshop is currently underway and today Keynote Speaker, Gloria Mark from the University of California at Irvine, gave a presentation on the different ways that information workers experience disruptions in their work and how they can maintain continuity in their work. Gloria discussed how multi-tasking impacts various aspects of collaboration and communication in the workplace, and the results challenge the traditional way that most IT is designed to organize information. A reminder that workshop abstracts are available at: http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/hcsnetevents/2007/hi4workshop.

HCSNet participants in the Media

Following the second HCSNet Next Generation Search Workshop held in July, several HCSNet participants were interviewed by IT journalist, Beverley Head. The article was recently published in The Age and Sydney Morning Herald, and is available here. If you are aware of other HCSNet-initiated coverage in the media, please let us know at newsletter@hcsnet.edu.au.
