Participant Spotlight

Shunichi Ishihara, Australian National University

Research area: Linguistics - Phonetics

My primary research interest is the acoustic-phonetic realisations of phonological features, such as tone and accent, particularly in Japanese dialects. Japanese is rich in dialectal varieties. The accentuations of many Japanese dialects have been auditorily described and phonologically analysed. However, the acoustic-phonetic realisations of the accentual/tonal contrasts of Japanese dialects have not been studied in detail. I am particularly interested in the relationships between the accentual/tonal contrasts of phonologically-typologically different Japanese dialects and their acoustic-phonetic realisations, aiming at an acoustic-phonetic based reconstruction of Japanese dialects.

HCSNet Workshop on Cognitive Science and Text - Call for Papers and Participation

To be held on 13-14 December at the Fairmont Resort, Leura, this workshop will focus on the processing of text from a variety of perspectives. Presentations will cover research in areas such as visual word recognition, reading and spelling, literacy development, lexical analyses of text and text-to-speech technology. An important aim is to report new data while showcasing the wide variety of state-of-the-art methodologies currently being used in studies of text. Joint HCSNet-HxI Workshop on Human Issues in Interaction and Interactive Interfaces

The program and abstracts for the HCSNet-HxI Workshop on Human Issues in Interaction and Interactive Interfaces to be held at the Australian Technology Park, Sydney on 13 and 14 September 2007 are now available at http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/hcsnetevents/2007/hi4workshop. The workshop is designed to bring together researchers interested in a range of issues, with a focus on the non-technical, related to human-machine interaction and computer-mediated human-human interaction. A specific sub-theme will be mediating collaboration and community between humans in distributed environments, in particular as targetted by HxI's Bracetto project.
