Participant Spotlight

Robert McArthur, CSIRO

Research area: Information Retrieval - Human-Computer Interaction

A key problem in the information-centric world today is that we are losing awareness of ourselves, other people and key knowledge that is of importance to us. Information overload encourages us to specialise and narrow our focus. My research is about examining ways to enhance systems and create new ones that capture and use information around us to automatically broaden our awareness where it is needed. Such systems must work with and in ways that accord with how people think and reason, so I have melded socio-cognitive theories with semantic space technologies to work with context sensitive associations and inferences. Recent work has been in extracting and using tacit knowledge from email messages from online communities and blogs in a range of situations, such as in detecting forgotten or hidden connections between people through to uncovering a change in a person's sense-of-self over time.

Joint HCSNet-HxI Workshop on Human Issues in Interaction and Interactive Interfaces

A reminder that the HCSNet and HxI joint workshop on Human Issues in Interaction and Interactive Interfaces will be held at the Australian Technology Park, Sydney on 13 and 14 September 2007. This workshop is designed to bring together researchers interested in a range of issues, with a focus on the non-technical, related to human-machine interaction and computer-mediated human-human interaction. HCSNet Workshop: Tough Problems in Human Communication Disorders

To be held at the University of Queensland on 15 September 2007, this workshop will bring together researchers, managers and industry leaders to address current or enduring problems, themes, and barriers to communication disorder management. A series of 20-30 minute presentations will present the latest research in speech pathology, audiology, service delivery, and technology whilst highlighting problems that have impeded progress in managing adult and paediatric communication problems. Second HCSNet Workshop on the Use of Vision in HCI (VisHCI2007)

A reminder that the VisHCI2007 workshop will be held as a Tutorial Day on Sunday, 2 December 2007. VisHCI2007 aims to bring together researchers, practitioners and students from a number of disciplines related to using vision and visual evidence in human-computer interaction (HCI). A total of 4 half-day tutorials will be offered by renowned international and Australian researchers: Fang Chen (NICTA), David Cristinacce (U Manchester, UK), and Edwin Hancock (U York, UK).
