Lab SpotlightSonic Communications Research Group , University of Canberra
The Sonic Communications Research Group is an interdisciplinary group of researchers and educators working with sound as a medium for creative communication. The group takes a practice-led research approach that seeks to crossover and integrate theory from media studies, design, information science, psychology and the creative arts. Our special expertise includes sonification, sonic-writing, haptic-audio, auditory interfaces, generative sound, music imagery, music cognition, auditory perception, and sound art, theory and practice. Current projects include research on the auditory streaming of data structures, the sonification of the financial markets, gestalt principles for multimodal interfaces, automatic classification of percussion timbres, perception of transitions in computer music, and an augmented reality interface for composing algorithmic music.

This workshop aims to bring together people interested in current issues at the intersection of collaboration in online communities and those working in tool design & development across different types of communities. Important questions to be covered in this workshop include: How do we build and maintain socially intelligent communities online? What is the role of collaborative tools in the success of online interactions and communities? How can the development of online interactive tools support persistence, moderation, leadership, and ease of communication? And how are these tools employed by users? The workshop will be held 6-7 December at UNSW and a call for papers will be distributed later this week. SummerFest '07: Forensic Speaker Recognition WorkshopHow well can you identify the voice of a criminal? In our technological age, more and more offenders are being recorded while committing crimes, and expert opinion is being increasingly sought in the legal process as to whether two or more recordings are from the same speaker. The way forensic speaker recognition is done in real life departs considerably from its depiction in popular TV crime shows like Law and Order and Crime Scene Investigation. The last ten years have witnessed exciting new developments in Forensic Speaker Recognition and this workshop brings together for the first time leading practitioners and experts to present state-of-the-art work in Forensic Speaker Recognition from several perspectives, including examples from real case-work. The workshop will be held 6-7 December at UNSW and a call for papers will be distributed later this week. HCSNet International Visiting Speaker ProgramDr Eneko Agirre (University of the Basque Country), an HCSNet International Visiting Speaker, will present the fourth of his seminars on this visit at Flinders University on 31 August 2007. The title of the seminar is 'Enriching and using large-scale lexico-semantic resources'; for more information, please visit http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/hcsnetevents/2007/agirre.
