HCSNet Update Newsletter Volume 3 Number 30Tuesday, 31st July 2007
In this issueParticipant SpotlightNathalie Colineau, CSIRO
Research area: Natural Language Processing - Human-Computer InteractionI am interested in helping people find the information that will assist them in their tasks and in their decision making. This places my research at the intersection of Information Retrieval, User Modelling and Language Technology, in particular, Natural Language Generation. More specifically, I’m looking at providing users with understandable information appropriate to their needs and situation, i.e. organised, expressed and presented in such a way as to enable them to readily and effectively make use of the information. My approach is to develop and evaluate solutions from a whole-of-system perspective – considering the system’s benefits and costs in the context of its stakeholders, their goals and tasks, and the information sources that the system requires.

We are currently calling for submissions for two components of SummerFest '07: the speed papers session and the student poster session. The student poster session is designed to help students get to know one another and to hear about research and hot topics in a range of disciplines. The poster session will feature plenty of food and drinks to keep the atmosphere lively, informal and social and along the way we hope you'll get to know your peers and receive useful feedback on your own research ideas. If you would like to participate in the student poster session please send a title and 200 word abstract by 24 September 2007. More details can be found on our website at http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/summerfest07/posters. The speed papers session is a fun, fast-paced way to get to know others at SummerFest. The speed paper concept is somewhat like speed dating - you get 4 slides and just 4 minutes to tell the assembled audience about a project you are already doing, or would like to do. Everyone in the audience has a form on which they can scribble relevant comments and feedback on your project. You then get to do the same for the other speed papers. If you would like to participate in the speed papers session please send a title and 200 word abstract by 24 September 2007. More details can be found on our website at http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/summerfest07/speedpapers. Travel subsidies* to attend SummerFest '07 will be available to individuals who present either a student poster or speed paper. If you require further information please contact Kym Buckley at HCSNet ky.buckley@uws.edu.au. We look forward to having your involvement in SummerFest '07. * Travel subsidies will be available for Australian-based participants living outside of Sydney only. Joint HCSNet-HxI Workshop on Human Issues in Interaction and Interactive Interfaces - CFPHCSNet and HxI (http://www.hxi.org.au) are organising a joint workshop on Human Issues in Interaction and Interactive Interfaces to be held in Sydney on 13 and 14 September 2007. This workshop is designed to bring together researchers interested in a range of issues, with a focus on the non-technical, related to human-machine interaction and computer-mediated human-human interaction. A specific sub-theme will be mediating collaboration and community between humans in distributed environments, in particular as targetted by HxI's Bracetto project. The aim is to identify shared interests, understand different perspectives, and to take first steps towards developing future collaborations. For further details, including the Call for Participation, please visit http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/hcsnetevents/2007/hi4workshop. HCSNet Member SearchWe've updated the member search feature on the HCSNet home page (http://www.hcsnet.edu.au) to make it easier for you to find our other members. Search terms are matched against: research areas; research interests; departments, divisions and labs; and first and last names. This means that you can now find members within a specific field, look for people from particular institution, find anyone who has mentioned a certain obscure area in their interests, or simply find all members whose names are Gladys! Both the search matching and the results layout have been improved - give it a try and let us know what you think. If you've got any comments or feedback please send them to webmaster@hcsnet.edu.au. NGS07 Workshop presentation slides and photos now availableThank you again to participants in the Second HCSNet Workshop of the Next Generation Search Priority Area held on 19-20 July 2007 at Macquarie University. Presentation slides are now available at http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/nextgensearch07/abstracts and several photos are available here.
